BlackBerry 7 Smartphones to Support Iris Recognition Biometrics

not actual image

RIM Media Relations let us know that Iris ID Systems Inc. Announced Interoperability Between Its IrisAccess Platform and NFC-Enabled BlackBerry Smartphones Equipped with HID Global`s iCLASS Digital Keys.

Press Release: CRANBURY, NJ. and IRVINE, Calif. – ISC West 2012 – Iris ID Systems Inc., formerly LG Electronics, Iris Technology Division, a leading provider of iris biometric technology, and HID Global, trusted leader in solutions for the delivery of secure identity, announced that the IrisAccess® platform iCAM7000 can be used with select NFC (Near Field Communications)-enabled BlackBerry® 7 smartphones. The BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900/9930 smartphones activated with HID Global’s iCLASS® digital credentials will be compatible with the installed base of iCLASS readers that are embedded in the iCAM 7000 series for applications ranging from physical access systems in buildings to applications that track time and attendance, and other identity dependent applications.

Using a NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphone, the iris templates of a user are securely stored to an iCLASS digital credential on the phone. That credential can then be presented for authentication by simply holding the NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphone in front of an iCAM7000 series iris camera, just like users do today with a physical iCLASS smart card.

Iris ID will demonstrate iCLASS credentials using the NFC capabilities of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone at the ISC West conference, March 28-30, in booth #4043 at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Charles Koo, President and CEO of Iris ID Systems Inc. said, “As a long time HID Connect® Premier Partner, we are excited to be part of this new implementation which allows iris technology to be coupled with a NFC-enabled smartphone. This is a key milestone for our identification technology; iris recognition is a perfect solution for providing strong authentication for enterprise security. As we did with iCLASS credentials some years ago, we are pleased to be first in bringing iris recognition biometrics to a host of secure identity dependent access control applications with NFC-enabled smartphones.”

“This is an important milestone in the deployment of mobile access and identity solutions using NFC technology on smartphones,” said Dr. Tam Hulusi, Senior Vice President of Strategic Innovation with HID Global. “NFC-enabled smartphones represent a complementary new platform that we believe will expand the access control market and our card services business while improving user security and convenience.”

Andrew Bocking, VP Handheld Software Product Management, at RIM, said, “Having added NFC capabilities to a range of our BlackBerry 7 smartphones, we’re excited to be able to support the secure storage of an Iris ID biometric template to an iCLASS credential. NFC enables smartphones to become even smarter mobile computing platforms, and this is another great example that demonstrates the potential that NFC on mobile devices brings to the physical access control space.”

Pilot programs using BlackBerry smartphones activated with iCLASS digital credentials and iris identification are planned for later this year. HID Global expects that its embedded iCLASS technology will be generally available for the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and BlackBerry® Curve™ 9350/9360 smartphones later this year. BlackBerry Traffic Application for BlackBerry Updated to v3.0.2.18

blackberry traffic for blackberry

BlackBerry Traffic v3.0.2.18 has been released to App World and should be available for most users. I have it showing up via App World on my device and via desktop so be on the lookout for this version of BlackBerry Traffic. This update does show a change-log that consists of bug fixes. After update your device will need re-booted to finish the install.

I really love the features with 3.0 and so far it has been extremely accurate and the voice guidance has pretty good timing with keeping you advised on upcoming turns.

Change Log:

  • Fixed a text UI bug.
  • Fixed a power management bug.

Details: With lots of places to go and people to see, planning to get places on time can be a challenge. Thanks to BlackBerry® Traffic 3.0, you can know your estimated time of arrival (ETA) based on current traffic conditions, and find out about alternate routes to avoid hold ups and toll booths. Plus, new voice guidance provides stress-free navigation and allows you to travel completely hands free; with the option to have clear voice instructions come through a Bluetooth headset or your vehicle’s sound system, and deliver turn-by-turn directions if you want them. In fact, you can make them as detailed as you like! Finally, when you know your ETA, you can keep your contacts updated via SMS, email, or PIN so they know when to expect you. Making – and keeping – plans just got a whole lot easier.

BlackBerry Messenger Beta v6.2.0.15. Available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone

bbm icon via BlackBerry Sites

BlackBerry Messenger has been updated in the BlackBerry Beta Zone to v6.2.0.15. If you are a member of the Beta zone you should be able to login and get the update now. Beta zone link is provided below. This update does require the keycode via beta zone downloads. Restart device after install/update

The new features and enhancements for BlackBerry Messenger 6.2 include the following items

  • Animated display pictures – More animated display pictures are now built into BBM. Change your picture to suit your mood.
  • Change your name or message inline – You can quickly change your name or status message without leaving your contact list by clicking the text at the top of the screen. To exit inline editing, just scroll down. You can still access your profile screen by clicking your display picture.
  • Streamlined voice notes – When your convenience key set to open BlackBerry Messenger, if you highlight a contact in BBM and press the convenience key, you can start recording a voice note. Once you’re done, pressing the convenience key again will send the voice note. Group chats. You can return to the default color at any time.
  • BlackBerry Tag enhancements – Adding contacts has never been easier. If your BlackBerry smartphone supports NFC technology, you can turn on the Allow Automatic Invitations by Tapping option. Then, as long as you or someone else has BBM open, you can add each other as contacts by aligning the backs of your smartphones. This feature requires that you both have the latest version of BBM installed on smartphones that support NFC technology.
  • Improved search – When typing the name of a contact or group, the search ignores special characters and emoticons to make it easier to find what you’re looking for.
  • Resend a message – If a message didn’t send (for example, if your smartphone was outside of a wireless coverage area), you can highlight the message and select Resend from the menu.
