While at BlackBerry World this year, I made a point to attend the BlackBerry 10 Jam keynote session with Alec Saunders, VP of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development at RIM. I was really excited to hear a lot of what he had to say, and what to look for in the future. This video is almost 30 minutes long but well worth a look. Alec covered things like what’s possible with the upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform and what’s coming for BlackBerry developer communities.

Nice to see the security of BlackBerry devices is still appreciated and recognized by most governments across the globe. I see they list the NFC feature as a function they intend to use quite a bit, which is a really cool feature for sure. I have not noticed anything for the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices but I am sure they will meet security expectations.

Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced DoD-wide approval for the use of BlackBerry® 7 smartphones. Working with U.S. Army and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) sponsors and partners, BlackBerry 7 smartphones have undergone successful testing through Army labs leading to a subsequent listing on DISA’s Unified Communications Approved Product List (UCAPL).

The approval allows all DoD customers to use the following BlackBerry 7 smartphones on DoD networks:

BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900 and 9930 (touch screen with keyboard)

BlackBerry® Torch™ 9810 (touch screen with slide out keyboard)

BlackBerry® Torch™ 9850 and 9860 (full screen touch screen)

BlackBerry® Curve™ 9360 (keyboard)

“The Army introduced a wide range of new apps and capabilities for their BlackBerry users last year, and these new BlackBerry 7 smartphones will now enable Army users, and all DoD users, to experience an even greater level of performance on new smartphones that include features such as voice activated universal search, Near Field Communications, Augmented Reality, and Social Feeds 2.0 just to name a few,” said Scott Totzke, SVP, BlackBerry Security Group at RIM. “RIM’s unwavering focus on security and RIM’s achievement of key security certifications including FIPS 140-2 validation and Common Criteria EAL4+ accreditation continue to be very important to many of our DoD and enterprise customers, but leveraging the full power of BlackBerry smartphones is also important as it helps them realize the full potential of their investment in the BlackBerry platform.”

While at BlackBerry World 2012 during the Q&A with Thorsten Heins he made a point to say, he still needed a COO and CMO and he was close to adding those positions. Nice to see that he is keeping the ball rolling, with this announcement today. These two should be great additions for RIM and more than anything I am curious to see how Frank Boulben new Chief Marketing Officer does going forward with marketing.

We have said in previous posts that BlackBerry Traffic as an example has come a long way, with features and functionality and this announcement today takes an already great product and improves it even more. This is great news as RIM continues to step up with both quality and performance for the end user.

Press Release:

NEW ORLEANS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–TomTom today announced that Research In Motion (RIM) is using TomTom’s award winning real-time traffic services for BlackBerry® applications. BlackBerry® Traffic is now powered by TomTom HD Traffic, giving customers access to the most accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date traffic information on the market. Additionally, TomTom maps and location content is used in BlackBerry® Maps, and for BlackBerry® Locate Services, which gives 3rd party software developers access to the mapping and traffic information for their own apps.

“TomTom’s market-leading real-time traffic information will provide BlackBerry customers with the best mobile travel experience.”

“Through our strategic relationship with RIM, we are enabling the future of mobile travel with powerful location content and real-time information, including HD Traffic,” said Nuno Campos, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for TomTom Licensing. “TomTom’s market-leading real-time traffic information will provide BlackBerry customers with the best mobile travel experience.”

“We’re thrilled to work with TomTom to leverage their industry-leading traffic and travel content for BlackBerry Traffic and BlackBerry Maps, and to enable access to those capabilities for BlackBerry developers as well,” said Martyn Mallick, Vice President, Global Alliances and Business Development at Research In Motion.

According to a recent study, TomTom’s traffic information saves commuters 50 minutes of travel time per week or approximately 40 hours per year. With HD Traffic, BlackBerry customers will be able to select the best route to their destinations in an effort to not only save time but also fuel.

While at the BlackBerry World 2012 keynote general session, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins shared details about the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Prototype devices that are being provided to developers attending BlackBerry 10 Jam. Since we make a few apps, I was fortunate enough to get one of these devices also, and so far the apps that I have ported over seem to work great with just a few tweaks needed. Please keep in mind the devices we got no way represent final hardware or software, so it’s kinda useless to show you a bunch of device pictures but this video will give a a look see. BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha will help enable developers to begin creating apps to provide a rich experience for the launch of the BlackBerry 10 platform.

RIM has announced the recipients of this year’s Wireless Achievement Awards at BlackBerry World™ 2012.

The Wireless Achievement Awards are presented to customers who are doing business in new and innovative ways with BlackBerry® products and services. These customers have mobilized corporate systems to help increase performance, impact the bottom line and simplify life for their employees.

A list of all finalists follows below, along with a brief summary of information and results provided by each winning recipient. The awards are classified into four categories: Attendee Choice, Business Impact, Innovation In Private Sector, and Innovation In Public Sector.

Attendee Choice Award

The Attendee Choice Award allowed BlackBerry World attendees to vote for one of the three finalists for applications developed by a business for its customers.

Winner: Cines Unidos — Venezuelan movie goers can now buy tickets and get news on upcoming features with the click of a button, thanks to Cines Unidos’s app for BlackBerry® smartphones. As well as buying tickets and obtaining receipts and confirmations, the easy-to-use app, developed in partnership with Mobile Media Networks, gives users a 40-minute show-time warning and the ability to share movie schedules with friends and book dates over BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™). Cines Unidos makes the app—which now has about 1.5 million users—available for download on BlackBerry App World™, and by scanning QR codes in theater lobbies, on posters and popcorn dispensers.

Finalists:

Banesco Banco Universal, C.A. – in partnership with Synergy Global Business C.A.®

OK! Magazine UK – in partnership with Refresh Mobile Ltd. (Mippin)

Business Impact

This award recognizes organizations that have deployed a wireless solution that has made a significant impact to their business.

Winner: Nomura International plc — Nomura International plc (Nomura) is a leading financial services group. Mobile users based in the London, UK office represented 14% of the workforce but accounted for two-thirds of the telecommunications spend. Mobile call costs were rising by 18% annually. Also, Nomura needed to comply with the UK’s Financial Services Authority’s (FSA) Policy Statement 10/17, which made call recording mandatory on mobile devices. Nomura implemented BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System (BlackBerry® MVS), to assist with its regulatory compliance. It also helped reduce the call spend among BlackBerry MVS users by nearly 36%. Fifty per cent of all mobile calls at Nomura’s UK office now go out over BlackBerry MVS.

Finalist:

Eversheds LLP – in partnership with Polaris Financial Technology Limited.

Innovation In Private Sector

This award recognizes organizations that have deployed new, innovative wireless solutions to drive business productivity.

Winner: Cablevisión S.A. Argentina — Cablevisión S.A. Argentina (Cablevisión) provides cable TV and broadband Internet service for more than 3.5 million customers in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In the past, Cablevisión’s 5,000 field technicians had difficulty staying connected with their support teams and had to log their work and inventory of supplies used by hand. Needing a reliable solution, the company deployed BlackBerry smartphones and the Mobile II application, developed by Sensebyte Mobile. The solution allows technicians to confirm work orders, report on service in near real-time and enter inventory updates even if offline. Cablevisión has significantly decreased calls to the support center while improving productivity and service.

Finalist:

IA Clarington Investments, Inc.™

Innovation In Public Sector

This award recognizes organizations that have used wireless solutions in innovative ways in healthcare, public safety and government.

Winner: Ministerio de Desarrollo Social — To help meet its mission of providing humanitarian aid and social assistance, Argentina’s Ministerio de Desarrollo Social, or Ministry of Social Development, turned to BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablets. The organization equipped 400 of its field operators and personnel in regions across the country with the devices in order to better capture and share information on situations, including natural disasters and health and food -related crises. Replacing the need for projectors, computers, and photo and video cameras, the solution allows the Minister and senior ministry officials to quickly respond to community needs, speeding up decision-making while improving information accuracy.

Finalist:

Gwent Frailty Consortium – in partnership with DevelopIQ Ltd. and LAN2LAN Ltd.
