I was excited at getting the chance to use SmartWiFi. For the longest time I had the impression that WiFi apps were kind of like memory boosting apps. In that they do little more than give the user a placebo effect. The reason why I felt this way is because the WiFi apps always promise to save battery life. The claim is that when your WiFi is turned on but not connected your BlackBerry will continually search for a connection. This searching for a connection is supposed to quickly drain your battery. The only problem is – it doesn't.
Many people, including myself have tested this. I've tested it on every WiFi enabled BlackBerry I have ever owned and never noticed a significant increase in battery life by leaving my WiFi off compared to leaving it on but not connected.
With all of this in mind I tried out the app and surprisingly, I love it. I can't speak for any of the other WiFi apps, But I found SmartWiFi to be a very useful app that works great. Its the kind of app that you just setup and forget about.
I have eight locations where I commonly use WiFi. All I had to do to add those locations was go to them. Once you are with in range of an open WiFi hotspot you get a little pop up that asks if you would like to save this location. If you hit yes your done and you literally never have to worry about it again. It works beautifully. It actually works so well that you don't even think about it. If you are in range of a saved location than your WiFi is connected, If you are out of range your WiFi gets turned off.
Another plus is that I have found several open WiFi hotspots thanks to SmartWiFi. The first day I had the app I was driving home from work and I seen my Bold's screen light up. It was SmartWiFi asking if I wanted to save a new WiFi connection. I was kind of shocked by that but hit yes and didn't think much of it. Well I drove for a while longer and it happened again. A week later and I am pretty sure I have every open WiFi hotspot location in my small town saved in SmartWiFi. I'm not sure how it does that. Or if it's actually a good thing to be doing. But I do like it.
I really didn't expect to like SmartWiFi as much as I do. Have I seen a noticeable increase in battery life since I started using it? Nope, not really. But I honestly don't care. Just automatically knowing I am always on WiFi if possible makes it a very nice app to have.
